Stay Safe with God on Life's Bumpy Roads

Palominas Chapel - Ford F100 truck

Are you fearful of being harmed? Do you have someone looking out for your good? Do you have someone to be a protecting shield for you, someone you can always count on, no matter what?

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoices; and with my song will I praise him.
-Psalm 28:7

If you are serving God, you have a helper and a shield! I was thinking back to a time when we needed God’s protection, and He was there!

My husband Nathan and I were driving down a very crowded interstate in an old truck—unbeknownst to us, with old tires. It was a gray 1970 Ford F100. We were about an hour from home, chatting about something or other, when we were surprised by a strange sound and a suddenly bumpy ride. Nathan informed me that a blown back tire was the cause of the ruckus.

We were driving very fast, but he calmly worked to slow us down so we could pull over. As he explained the best way to handle a blowout, things seemed manageable. surrounded by traffic, and heading under an overpass with its massive cement pillars. That’s when the rims gripped the pavement and sent us spinning. We were spinning so fast we could feel the truck begin to lift on one side, getting ready to barrel-roll down the road. All we had time for was a quick, whispered, “God help us!” The rest was miraculous.

The truck dropped back down and continued spinning until it came to a stop on the grassy bank just past the overpass. We didn’t hit any of the many cars around us or the big cement pillars so close by as we spun wildly. God was so good to us! The truck was totaled from the spinning. We didn't have airbags, but we had God.

I can’t say my nerves weren’t rattled for a day or two afterward, but I was incredibly thankful that I had turned my life over to the One in charge of the universe long before. I had let Him take the reins of my life, and He came through in our moment of need. You never know what’s coming up next on the road of life. Have you turned your safety over to the One who knows best how to protect you?

We can travel through life confident that we have God’s shield of protection at all times. How? You ask. It starts with a simple prayer: “God, please help me and guide me.” Then, follow His lead. He’ll pave your road with blessings.
