This story was shared by my father and former pastor, G. William Harding (Billy). It beautifully illustrates how Jesus completes the puzzle of your life.
In the past, Darwinian scientists sought "missing links" to prove their theories, only to later abandon the search in favor of complex evolutionary pathways. Yet, they’ve never answered the most fundamental question: where did the first things come from, and how were they created? Like those scientists, people often try to fill an emptiness inside, searching for something to make them whole.
But only Jesus Christ can complete the picture of our lives and connect us to the promise of eternal life. If you feel that something is missing, a life with Christ is the only answer. No human effort can find the missing piece of salvation—only Christ can.
Jesus Completes the Puzzle of Your Life
I can still remember, as a little boy, watching my mother often put together jigsaw puzzles—the very large ones. I tried, but Mother would let me place it. I never had any trouble finding where the final piece fit.
One evening, my dad switched the last piece of the puzzle with one from another puzzle box. I turned that little piece around and around, trying to make it fit, but no matter how hard I tried, it wouldn’t go in. After watching me struggle for a while, my dad held up the real missing piece, and of course, it fit perfectly.
One afternoon, a neighbor lady and my mother were talking and working on another puzzle. On my way out to play, I stopped by the table, picked up one of the puzzle pieces, stuck it in my pocket, and went outside. A long time later, after the two women had searched everywhere for that last piece, I heard my mother calling, “Billy, come here. Do you know where a piece of my puzzle is?” I pulled it from my pocket, ran to the table, and, after a little tussle with the neighbor lady for the honor, snap—I put it in! Once again, I had placed the last piece in the puzzle. There it was before me, complete.
The puzzle always looked unfinished without that one important piece. Without it, the picture was never whole, never beautiful.
No matter what you aspire to, your complex and complacent lives are never complete and beautiful unless Jesus is in His place in your hearts, never, never, no matter what you obtain or aspire to.
Sometimes, people feel like their lives are missing something—like a puzzle with a missing piece. You may feel an empty spot inside, yearning to be filled with that missing piece. The feeling of something missing can be replaced by a desire to accomplish things and to tell others how you found inner peace in Christ.
Key Takeaway
Just as the last piece of a puzzle completes the beautiful picture, Jesus Christ is the only one who can complete the picture of your life. Every empty space, every moment of confusion and longing to change, is simply a reflection of that missing piece. Christ holds it in His hands, waiting for you to let Him place it, transforming your life into the masterpiece it was always meant to be.
The missing piece isn’t something you can find alone—no human effort will ever fill the emptiness inside or quiet the voices. Only Christ can do that for you. When you allow Him to place that final piece, everything will begin to look different. The emptiness is gone. The picture is complete. And with Jesus's spirit as the center, your life becomes a radiant reflection of His glory, leading you to eternal life.
Let Christ Jesus place the final piece. And be made whole!
