Palominas Chapel - Turkey

Have you ever had someone show you what real faith looks like, trusting God in a way that makes you stop and think? In this story, you’ll see how one man’s simple but powerful trust in God became a living example of how God provides when we put our faith in Him.

Thanksgiving is coming up again, a time when our nation sets aside time to be thankful for all that God has blessed us with. My mind naturally goes to Brother Craig, a dear old minister friend of ours. Every time he prayed, it felt like a sermon. He was well-loved and respected, especially by us young parents. We loved hearing the stories he shared about the miracles he and his wife experienced over the years.

One of those stories was about a Thanksgiving turkey. Brother Craig and his wife had three small boys at the time. He worked in the coal mines in southern Ohio, and they were very poor. They were headed to their parents’ house for Thanksgiving and were supposed to bring the turkey, but they didn’t have any money to buy one. Brother Craig saw this as an opportunity to show their boys how to pray and trust God to answer their prayers.

They gathered the boys together and told them that they were going to pray for a turkey and trust God to give them what they asked for. The days went by, and they kept praying as a family, trusting that God would provide. Three days left, two days, then the day came to leave for Grandma and Grandpa’s house—but still no turkey.

Doubt started to creep in for the parents. But they rebuked it and reminded themselves they were teaching their boys to trust God. The three little boys, still full of faith, climbed into the car, trusting God would answer. As they were driving, they all couldn't help but notice a brown paper bag, neatly wrapped, lying on the side of the road. It was cold in Ohio that November, and Sister Craig got excited and told her husband to stop the car. She rushed over to the package, and inside was a fresh, cleaned, ready-to-bake turkey.

That’s what Thanksgiving means to me. These saints were such good examples to us young parents raising children. We live as examples to the younger generations, teaching them how to love and serve the Lord and showing them how God cares for us and answers prayer.

Key Takeaway

Trusting God in everyday moments, even when things seem uncertain, is a powerful way to experience His provision and show others the strength of faith in action.
